{"id":67,"date":"2015-11-14T12:53:29","date_gmt":"2015-11-14T17:53:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/willchinda.com\/blog\/?p=67"},"modified":"2015-11-14T12:53:29","modified_gmt":"2015-11-14T17:53:29","slug":"agile-game-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/willchinda.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/14\/agile-game-night\/","title":{"rendered":"Agile Game Night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently had the opportunity to attend the first Agile Game Night put on by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/tampa-bay-agile\/\">Tampa Bay Agile<\/a> and found it to be a great experience. As a big fan of <a href=\"http:\/\/gamestorming.com\/\">Gamestorming<\/a>\u00a0and similar training\/collaboration\/ideation games, I love that there&#8217;s a place\u00a0that can act as\u00a0a kind of\u00a0&#8220;laboratory&#8221; for me\u00a0to experience them directly and determine if they can be used in my own work.\u00a0Here&#8217;s a recap of the games we played, and my thoughts on each one&#8217;s\u00a0potential use.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Commonalities<\/strong> game (from the book <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1HPTShu\">Improv-ing Agile Teams<\/a>): intro game to help a group of people get to know each other. We had 7 people in our group, and supposedly it gets more interesting the more people there are.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Everyone brings their chairs to sit around in a circle<\/li>\n<li>One person stands in the center and says something about themselves\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWho here has red hair?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWho here has children?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWho here has lived on the west coast?&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Everyone who has that trait or similarity has to stand up\n<ul>\n<li>If no one else stands up, the person in the middle has to come up with a new question<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Everyone standing has to switch chairs<\/li>\n<li>The last person to get in a chair is the next person to stand in the middle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>Potential uses:<\/i> This was a great ice breaker for our group, and a surprisingly\u00a0quick introduction to each other\u00a0outside of the standard work\/job stuff. I generally don&#8217;t have much interest in &#8220;ice breakers,&#8221; but I can see where it might be useful when putting together teams or groups that need to get up to speed quickly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Break it Down\/Build it Up<\/strong> game (from the book <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1HPTWxS\">Ctrl Shift<\/a>): a creativity game to get people brainstorming and working together in a positive way.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Given a product (we were given luggage, but any ordinary everyday object would work), teams have 8 minutes to discover all the ways the product won\u2019t succeed\n<ul>\n<li>Present their argument to the rest of the room<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Teams then have 8 more minutes to discover all the ways the product will succeed<\/li>\n<li>One person counts the number of times people say \u201cyes, but\u2026\u201d (in the retrospective, this is pointed out as being negative \u2013 a positive way to say it would be \u201cyes, and\u2026\u201d)\n<ul>\n<li>Present their argument to the rest of the room<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/willchinda.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/agilegamesnight001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-68\" src=\"https:\/\/willchinda.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/agilegamesnight001.jpg\" alt=\"Break it down, build it up\" width=\"831\" height=\"471\" srcset=\"https:\/\/willchinda.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/agilegamesnight001.jpg 831w, https:\/\/willchinda.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/agilegamesnight001-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 831px) 100vw, 831px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Potential uses:<\/em>\u00a0This was a simple exercise that got\u00a0us talking and collaborating in positive ways. It was interesting to see how going through the negative activity slowed us down when we flipped to being positive. Despite this, it seemed to focus a bit more on what the true value of our object really was. In practice, I think it might be more compelling to get teams to come up with a &#8220;pitch&#8221; (like in the next activity) to force them into finding that focus. The presentations as they were kind of just turned into listing a bunch of things.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pains\/Gains<\/strong> mapping (from the book <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1MIQKJL\">Gamestorming<\/a>): another creativity game where we used mapping to develop empathy for the person that we were trying to persuade. In this case, we had to pitch the idea of adding attachments to emails in the original iPhone (pretending we were in 2007) to Steve Jobs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Everyone starts by getting inside the mind of Steve Jobs<\/li>\n<li>What are his pains?\n<ul>\n<li>What does a bad day look like for him?<\/li>\n<li>What is he afraid of?<\/li>\n<li>What keeps him awake at night?<\/li>\n<li>What is he responsible for?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>What are his gains?\n<ul>\n<li>What does this person want and aspire to?<\/li>\n<li>How does he measure success?<\/li>\n<li>Given the subject at hand, how could this person benefit?<\/li>\n<li>What can we offer this person?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Using this map as a guide, everyone puts together a pitch<\/li>\n<li>One person delivers this pitch to the room<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-69\" src=\"https:\/\/willchinda.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/agilegamesnight002.jpg\" alt=\"agilegamesnight002\" width=\"852\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/willchinda.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/agilegamesnight002.jpg 852w, https:\/\/willchinda.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/agilegamesnight002-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 852px) 100vw, 852px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Potential uses:<\/em> Definitely the most intriguing exercises of the night, but\u00a0one that initially left me a little confused\u00a0(since there are multiple stages to it, maybe delivering the instructions at each stage would be more clear). I love the idea of &#8220;organizing your empathy&#8221; for the person who&#8217;s receiving your message &#8211; a tool that could be useful not only in a training session, but in business in general. The end product created by teams in the exercise is also really interesting. Since there&#8217;s so many different ways you can &#8220;pitch&#8221; an idea, the creative possibilities are a lot more open than simply presenting\u00a0a list of benefits and drawbacks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"excerpt\">I recently had the opportunity to attend the first Agile Game Night put on by Tampa Bay Agile and found it to be a great experience.
